Groundlings aim as a professional Theatre in Education Company is to illustrate key elements of History, Literature and PSHE Study units in the National Curriculum using drama and comedy. We encourage children's natural enthusiasm to learn through interaction and entertainment.

The Egyptians - KS2

An Egyptologist from the British Museum is on a hunt for clues about how life was lived by this great and mysterious civilisation. An amulet belonging to a young Egyptian leads us on a journey to meet Ra and the Pharoah, learning the secrets of mummification and the afterlife while audience help with the building of the Great Pyramid. An hour long show followed by a 2 Hour workshop.

The Greeks - KS2

Experience tragedy and comedy, meet the Gods and join Theseus on his quest to rid Greece of the hideous and terrifying Minotaur. An hour long show followed by a 2 hour workshop.

The Romans - KS2

Benny the Briton is set to work for the invading Roman army. Through song and interaction we learn what the Romans did for us, how they lived and how they forged the most powerful empire in the world. An hour long show with a 2 hour drama workshop.

The Vikings - KS2

A time travelling alien invades your school, taking the children back to Anglo Saxon Britain with a pit stop at Roman Britain on the way. A friendly Viking reveals secrets of the Norse culture and warfare while on the hunt for Thor's magic belt. An hour long show followed by a 2 hour drama workshop.

The Tudors - KS2

Absorb the larger than life atmosphere of the Tudors, with the Spanish Armada lurking in the English Channel and William Shakespeare waiting in the wings. From Henry VIII and the reformation to the Golden Age of Elizabeth 1, the audience become a part of the story as  it happens. An hour long show followed by a 2 hour drama workshop.

Victorians - KS2

This Victorian Top Hat tale is an entertaining educational look at life in Victorian Britain. Two comic inventors and a range of period characters take the audience back in time to experience Victorian domestic life , inventions, education and the Great Exhibition of 1851. The show ends with a visit to the Victorian music hall, where the audience play all the parts. An hour long show followed by a 2 hour workshop.

World War 1 - KS4

This workshop allows the audience to gain an understanding of life in the trenches and at home during 'The Great War', through a presentation inspired by real letters sent during the conflict. The drama workshop tht follows gives the pupils the chance  to develop a personal response to the hardships faced and to the propaganda of war. This workshop can support programmes of study  upon the history of the period, war poetry, or related set literature texts. An hour long show followed by a 2 hour drama workshop.

World War 2 - KS3

Meet housewife Mrs Magorian and shopkeeper Mr Docherty, as you are taken back through time for a glance  at life in wartime . Learn about rationing, the evacuees, Pearl Harbour and the Home Front while gaining an understanding of what it may have been like to be part  of this important period of history. Ideas have been taken from real speeches and wartime news reports as well as from the popular class readers on this topic. The 2 hour drama workshop which follows can focus on a specified novel of your choice, or can cover various topics which relate to your own World War 2 programme of study.
