The
Groundlings
Theatre
Company
was
founded
by
Professional
Actor
Richard
Stride
in 2000
and is
based in
Portsmouth,
England.
In
Shakespeare’s
time the
audience
at the
Globe
Theatre
who
stood in
the
‘ground’
area to
watch
his
plays
were the
humblest
and
often
riotous
of the
people.
They
were
known as
‘The
Groundlings’.
It is
from
this
Richard
took the
name.
The
Company’s
first
performance
was "The
Unusual
Suspects"
at
Tristian
Bates
Theatre
in the
West
End.
During
that
summer
Richard
took a
Shakespeare
Festival
around
Hampshire
and
Sussex
performing
Twelfth
Night,
Othello,
Romeo
and
Juliet,
Much Ado
About
Nothing
and
Midsummer
Night’s
Dream.
Reviews
from
these
plays
were
described
as
"Electric!"
- The
Stage,
"Othello
– Best
show
2000" –
Latest
Magazine,
"Festival
starts
in
style."
– The
Portsmouth
News and
"Must
see…" -
Radio
Ocean
FM.
It was
after
this
successful
beginning
that
Groundlings
Theatre
Company
was
formed
and
Richard
held
open
auditions
to stage
‘The
Lion,
The
Witch
and The
Wardrobe
at the
New
Theatre
Royal in
Portsmouth.
Once
again
excellent
reviews
were
given
"The
most
ambitious
production
to be
staged
at the
New
Theatre
Royal…
Amazing
Success!"
The
Portsmouth
News.
Richard’s
vision
was then
to offer
tutoring
in all
aspects
of
theatre
and TV
and Film
to
students
from
seven to
adult.
Under
the
direction
of
Richard
Stride,
Groundlings
Drama
School
was
started
and
currently
has over
100
students
attending
various
classes.
